The original of this work, in the Louvre Museum in Paris France, bears the signature of the Greek artist Agasias of Ephesus. It is probably of the Hellenistic period, although it embodies elements of the style of the earlier fourth century sculptor Lysippus. The work represents a warrior engaged in combat, the left arm showing a strap of the shield with which he defends himself, while the right arm is drawn back to deal a heavy blow.
